I looked at my watch. It was somehow mid-way through the morning and I had to leave in 25 min. to get my son to his soccer game.  I’d been busy from the moment my feet hit the floor, but I still didn’t have enough time to do all that I wanted, including get a work-out in.  At this point I decided to enact the philosophy that has become my go-to parenting motto: “Something is better than nothing.”

SomethingLooking at my son, I said, “Get all of your stuff on – I’m going to do sprints around the circle. Be in the car in 25 min. I’ll tie your shoes when we get there.” And off I went.  It wasn’t what I’d planned for my workout, but it was something, and that was better than nothing.

How many times do we give up on an idea or on plans altogether because we don’t feel that we are going to be able to do it well?

But there is a problem with that.  As parents, most of the time things don’t go as planned.  Most of the time, there is downright chaos.  So if we wait for the right time, it simply will not come.

That is why adopting this motto helps.

In our family we say it when we are forced to have family dessert instead of family dinner due to sports.  We say it as we fit in a few chores.  And we say it as we gather for a quick family game.

In an ideal world we’d have long family dinners, a full chore chart running every day of the week, and fun-filled evenings full of laughter.  But {sigh}, most days this is not my reality.  I have a choice to make.  I can throw up my hands and forget it altogether, or I can do what I can do, no matter how small.

And small matters.

Small stones, thrown together, create a mountain.

So, my encouragement to you today is to keep throwing stones.  Alone they are insignificant, but together, create impact.

Day #6 Dare {of the 31 Day Dare}:

Repeat the motto “Something is better than nothing,” then apply that to your day.
